Why Online Therapy?

Online therapy at Great Lakes Mindfulness is just like in-person therapy, only we meet online using a secure video platform. Some other common names for online therapy are distance therapy, e-therapy, teletherapy, and internet therapy. Online therapy works really well for people who have little time to spare, or for people who feel more comfortable in their own environment or behind a screen.

There are three main reasons why more and more people are choosing online health services:

Convenience

With online therapy, you don’t have to work your schedule around therapy. Online therapy fits your life, allowing you to be wherever you want during our sessions. This means we can meet while you’re at home, during a break from work, while you’re on the treadmill, or from practically anywhere else.  Whether you live in a rural area, don’t have much time to spare, or have difficulty leaving your home, online therapy is available for you.

Comfort

Let’s be honest... some of us are still nervous about starting therapy for the first time, or about others knowing we’re in therapy. Online therapy offers an added layer of privacy, making it easier to take that first step toward improving your mental health.  Plus, the more comfortable you are, the more open and honest you’ll be with yourself and your therapist. After all, the most important piece of effective therapy is your comfort.

I also tend to utilize body sensing practices in therapy that often work best when you are lying down, and being able to lie down on your own bed, couch, or yoga mat can make the experience even more comfortable for you.

Cost

Time is money. So many of us have incredibly full schedules, it can feel impossible to add anything else. With online therapy, there is no commute, no lost work time, no time spent in a waiting room, and no travel costs. This allows you to spend your extra time and money on the more important things in your life.

Research has indicated that online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy. If you’re interested in the research, the Telebehavioral Health Institute has listed over 1000 studies here.
